Next up was the front porch, which had a classic East Vancouver lean
to it! So this became our major project for 1998...

Late Spring, 1998
At first the plan was only to demolish the steps, fix the porch,
and then build new steps, but by the time we got a chance to look
under the porch all that changed. The porch had a foundation -
just it wasn't sitting on it! So there was rot everywhere and
this left us with only one option...
...demolish it and start over!!!

Early Summer, 1998
So after ending up with no porch at all (above), we started rebuilding
and after a week of hard work, had a new frame and deck in place.
And most importantly, somewhere to sit outside for dinner once
again!

Autumn, 1998
Of course, getting the finishing touches done always takes time.
And this seemed to be the project that just didn't want to die!
As the fall leaves start to build up on the ground, we have stairs,
but no handrails, and are still working on waterproofing and rubberizing
the porch surface...

Later. Much later...
The shingles were finished some time in mid-autumn, the handrails
were done over the winter, and the front path was only finished
in the spring... So it was actually next summer before we finally
got to take the "after" photo, by which time we also
had new windows and a new front door, which all help to make the
finished effort look so much better!
